Assassin’s Creed: Shadow for Nintendo Switch 2 has attracted technical analysis attention after the official trailer was released. According to the latest podcast content from Shumao Society, this version does not use ray tracing global illumination (RTGI) technology, which is one of the important graphic features of the current generation version. Analysis suggests that although the ported version has some trade-offs in terms of visual performance, the overall effect still performs well under hardware limitations.

The initial trailer released on Nintendo’s official channel had a resolution of 720p and a frame rate of 30FPS, and later Ubisoft offered a 1080p version. Oliver Mackenzie from Digital Foundry pointed out that there are “no obvious signs of ray tracing” in the image, and stated that the outdoor area has weak lighting levels and slight blues shadows, suggesting the use of baked global lighting instead of dynamic ray tracing.
This situation is consistent with Ubisoft’s previous approach on the Xbox Series S platform, which eliminated ray tracing to maintain 30FPS performance. Analysis suggests that considering the performance limitations in Switch 2 handheld mode, this is a necessary optimization. The lighting model mainly relies on pre calculated probes, which may cause the ambient light to appear flattened.

In addition to lighting, Shumao Society also pointed out that this version lacks object level dynamic blur, with reduced shadows and fog effects, and slightly lower overall image clarity. However, analysts still evaluate it as having a “good overall impression” and say that Ubisoft has successfully preserved the unique artistic style and atmosphere of the series.
John Linneman, a member of Shumao Society, said that although the lack of ray tracing is more obvious in the dark environment, the overall game is still impressive, and he believes that the finished product can bring a stable visual experience. He also believes that displaying next-generation works in low resolution trailers is a “promotional mistake”.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadow is set in the late Warring States period of Japan and features a dual protagonist system. Players can freely switch between ninja Nasu Jiang and warrior Yasuke, experiencing both stealth and frontal combat gameplay. The game features dynamic weather, seasonal changes, and a reactive NPC system, showcasing the most detailed Japanese scenes in the series.
The game was released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC platforms on March 20, 2025. The Switch 2 version is developed by Ubisoft’s internal team and has undergone technical adjustments for hybrid architecture. It is scheduled to be released on December 2, 2025.
