R Star once secretly planned a medieval fantasy masterpiece, but unfortunately it was stillborn

Rockstar co-founder Dan Hauser recently confirmed that the studio did plan a medieval fantasy themed game, but the project has never entered the actual production stage.

In 2019, there were rumors that Rockstar, the developer of Grand Theft Auto, may break through tradition and create a knight simulation game that replaces firearms with swords and shields. At that time, Rockstar had just released “Red Dead Redemption 2” after years of polishing, and the team immediately drafted several preliminary conceptual plans.

Among them is’ Project Medieval ‘- a work set in a new IP that focuses on knight armor and ranger adventure. Although the rumor has never been confirmed, Rockstar co-founder Dan Hauser recently admitted for the first time in an interview with Lex Friedman that the project had entered the conceptual exploration phase.

After ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’, we did come up with a knight theme and attempted to create a version with a certain mythological and legendary style. This direction would be very interesting, and I still love this idea to this day, but it was not deeply developed in the end, “Hauser revealed.” We didn’t even have time to write a script, we just built some background settings and explored several possibilities. This was a field I never wanted to venture into, but gradually developed an interest in the exploration process

Currently, Rockstar is fully committed to the development of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is known as the most anticipated entertainment product in the world. After its release, the team will continue to update the GTA online mode content. Therefore, it is still unknown where Rockstar’s next 3A level masterpiece will fall. However, it can be certain that the revenue brought by GTA6 may support this studio in realizing more ambitious and crazy ideas in the future.
