After a period of delay, Apple announced that it will launch its AI driven real-time translation feature in the European Union in December. This move is significant, not only because real-time translation is a major selling point of the recently released AirPods Pro 3, but also because the company warned in September that complying with the EU’s Digital Markets Act could lead to a delay in the launch of this feature.
Next month, AirPods Pro 3, Pro 2, and AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation will launch real-time translation capabilities in the EU region. This feature can automatically translate voice between English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, and Korean. The real-time translation function can seamlessly translate between different AirPods earphones and intelligently reduce the speaker’s volume, making the translated content easier to hear.
In September, Apple attributed potential delays to “additional engineering work” to ensure the privacy of translated conversations, with a particular emphasis on “ensuring that conversation content is not leaked to other companies or developers”. However, waiting for this feature should be worth it. If you want to experience this feature before the official release, it is currently available in the EU region using an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence (running iOS 26.2 developer beta) with compatible AirPods for real-time translation. The public beta version of the software update will also be released soon.
