Musk: Starship paves the way for large-scale deployment of solar powered AI satellites

On November 9th, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, said on X platform today, “With the advent of starships, the road to large-scale deployment of solar powered artificial intelligence satellites has finally been opened up. This is also what I believe is the only path to achieve the deployment of 1 terawatt of artificial intelligence computing power per year

Musk previously revealed that SpaceX will undertake over 90% of global orbital payload launch missions this year, with China accounting for about 5% and the remaining 5% shared by other US companies and countries around the world. He predicted that after the Starship achieves high-frequency launches, SpaceX is expected to undertake over 99% of global orbital transportation missions, which is crucial for realizing the Mars colonization plan.

Elon Musk’s xAI company is building a supercomputing center in Tennessee equipped with millions of GPUs, but is facing a serious power shortage problem and needs to build additional power generation facilities to meet demand.

At the same time, multiple space startups are planning to send data centers into orbit and use solar energy to solve the huge energy consumption problem caused by AI computing. Starcloud and other companies plan to operate simplified AI models through space data centers, with the future goal of building gigawatt level orbital data centers.

Musk previously stated that the Starship plans to land on Mars with Optimus Prime robots by the end of 2026 and may achieve manned missions to Mars between 2029 and 2031.
