On the 13th, according to media reports, Apple and Tencent reached a groundbreaking agreement. According to the agreement, Apple will be responsible for processing payments in WeChat mini games and mini programs, and will extract a 15% share from the user’s purchase amount.
According to reports, the negotiation lasted for over a year and the final agreement opened up new sources of revenue for Apple and eased Tencent’s pressure in payment and regulatory aspects. Previously, Apple demanded that Tencent shut down the practice of developers bypassing the App Store through external payment channels to extract commissions, and the implementation of this agreement means that this dispute has been resolved.
It is reported that if developers want to meet the sharing criteria, they need to meet some software requirements of Apple, such as supporting parents to share their children’s age group information. A Tencent spokesperson declined to comment, and Apple has not responded yet.

Apple and Tencent reach payment agreement for mini program games
As early as August last year, Tencent had stated that it was in discussions with Apple on an “economically sustainable and fair” cooperation plan, allowing Apple to obtain a reasonable share from the sales of mini games and mini programs on the iPhone. Previously, due to a lack of agreements, Apple was unable to generate any revenue from these transactions.
Compared to Apple’s standard 30% commission for most app developers, the 15% share ratio is significantly lower, but this will help Apple further enter the rapidly growing small game market in China. WeChat currently has 1.41 billion monthly active users, and its mini game business brought Tencent approximately 32.3 billion yuan (4.5 billion US dollars) in social network revenue in the third quarter of this year, accounting for a significant proportion.
In the past few years, Apple has adjusted its in app purchase policy in multiple markets, gradually relaxing or lowering its commission rates, and allowing alternative payment methods in some regions. This agreement with Tencent is seen as an important step towards normalizing the relationship between Apple and China’s largest social platform, and may also set a new precedent for sharing profits in other software transactions for iPhone in China.
