U.S. Bans Import of New Models of Drones from DJI and Other Foreign Manufacturers

On Monday, December 22, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added China’s DJI Innovations, Autel Robotics, and all foreign-made drones and drone components to its “Covered List,” effectively prohibiting the approval of new drone imports or sales in the United States.

According to Reuters, the FCC determined that these foreign companies pose an unacceptable risk to U.S. national security. Inclusion on the Covered List means DJI, Autel, and other foreign drone manufacturers will no longer be able to obtain FCC authorization, thereby barring them from selling new drone models or critical components in the U.S. market.

In September, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced plans to introduce rules restricting imports of Chinese drones. Monday’s announcement marks a significant escalation in Washington’s campaign against Chinese drone companies.

The FCC stated that imports, sales, and use of existing drone models previously approved by U.S. telecom regulators remain unaffected, and consumers may continue using any drones they legally purchased before the ban.

DJI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Previously, DJI noted that placing it on the Covered List effectively bans the company from selling new drone models in the United States.

DJI is the world’s largest drone manufacturer, holding more than 50% of the U.S. commercial drone market share.
