Apple has introduced the iPhone Air ultra thin smartphone at its September keynote, confirming months of rumors about the new device model to its product lineup. Apple described the new model as having a slim and sleek design with professional grade specifications, indicating that the iPhone Air is not only its thinnest iPhone to date at 5.6mm, it is also the brand’s most durable. It features a Ceramic Shield 2 covering to protect not only the front display but also the back panel, including the camera plateau, while its titanium frame and IP68 water and dust resistance rating are intended to add to its sturdiness. The light material allows it to weigh in at just 165 grams. The smartphone follows the launch of Samsung’s ultra-thin phone, the Galaxy S25 Edge in May, which comes in at 5.8mm and 163 grams, and also rivals foldables such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 in terms of thinness.
The iPhone Air is available in reflective color options including Space Black, Cloud White, Light Gold, and Sky Blue. The device features a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion refresh rate up to 120Hz and 3,000 nits of peak brightness. Apple has introduced the A19 Pro CPU, which is accompanied by the N1 chip, enabling wireless connectivity, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, and the C1X modem, which aids in power efficiency. Overall, Apple claims the iPhone Air has levels of compute comparable to the MacBook Pro. Storage options start at 256GB, and include 512GB, and 1TB.
Apple has developed new camera systems for the iPhone Air, including a new 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera, which includes a square sensor and wide field of view that allows users to capture images in different angles, portrait and landscape, without moving the handset. The main camera includes a 48-megapixel Fusion camera, which has additional custom lenses, including the 28mm and 35mm focal lengths, and 2x telephoto. Another new camera feature is Dual Capture, which allows for 4K HDR streaming or recording from both the front and rear camera at the same time. Much like other recent models, the iPhone Air is eSim only, which aids in its slim design, and global compatibility.
The brand promises an all day battery life for the iPhone Air. There is an Adaptive Power Mode within iOS 26, which learns users’ battery consumption to predict when battery power might drop. The handset was also designed internally to maximize as much space as possible for the battery. One of the accessories that pairs with the smartphone is a MagSafe Battery that snaps onto the back and provides the equivalent of 40 hours of video playback between both devices. The iPhone Air starts at $999. Preorders for the smartphone starts Friday, and it will be available for general purchase on September 19.
