EU's top diplomat: China increasingly weaponizes economic relations

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kallas, stated on Monday (December 15th) that China is increasingly weaponizing its economic relations for political gain.

Reuters quoted Kaja Kallas as as saying after a meeting of EU foreign ministers, "Today, ministers discussed how to better utilize our trade arsenal to enhance Europe's resilience

She continued, "No European country can stand up to China alone

This year, China's trade surplus with the European Union is approaching a historic high of 30 billion US dollars (38.72 billion Singapore dollars). The trade imbalance between China and Europe has been seen by European leaders as a critical issue for the survival of European industries, and may trigger the biggest reflection on the EU's policy towards China in at least 10 years. The trade conflict between the two sides could erupt at any moment.

The foreign trade data released by the General Administration of Customs of China last Monday (December 8th) showed that China's trade surplus exceeded $1 trillion for the first time, highlighting the dominant position of Chinese manufacturing and raising global attention to trade imbalances.

Due to China's shift of goods facing US tariffs to the European Union, the scale of China's exports to Europe is currently more than twice that of the EU's exports to China. Bloomberg reported that China's export boom is putting it on a path of conflict with Europe.
