After an Indian citizen was detained at Shanghai airport last month, India hopes that China will provide guarantees that Indian citizens transiting through Chinese airports will not be subjected to "selective targeting, arbitrary detention or harassment".

According to Reuters, New Delhi strongly protested to Beijing on Monday (December 8th) over the alleged arbitrary detention of an Indian citizen at the airport, stating that such incidents undermine efforts to rebuild bilateral relations.

Reuters reported that according to Indian media, Tondok, who lives in the UK and holds an Indian passport, was stopped during a transit on November 21 and informed that her passport was invalid because she was born in the eastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

She was prevented from boarding the subsequent flight to Japan and detained for 18 hours.

We hope that the Chinese authorities will ensure that Indian citizens passing through Chinese airports will not be selectively targeted, arbitrarily detained or harassed, and that regulations related to international air travel will be complied with, "said Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jaswar at the weekly press conference

He also advised Indian citizens to act with caution when traveling to or passing through China.

Beijing stated last month that airport inspections are conducted in accordance with the law and regulations.
