The partnership between OnePlus and iconic Swedish camera brand Hasselblad, which began with the OnePlus 9 series in 2021 and has lasted five generations, is over.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed in a letter posted to the company’s forum that the next flagship will no longer use the Swedish Hasselblad brand for its phone cameras, as spotted by 9to5Google.

The flagship OnePlus 13, which we reviewed in January, used the fifth-generation Hasselblad camera system to deliver camera features that were improved from the OnePlus 12. These included a more compact, lighter Triprism Telephoto Lens, an upgraded portrait mode and 4K Dolby Vision video recording with every camera.

In spite of this, and although we rated the OnePlus 13 highly, we didn’t think its camera system was quite top-notch. If you’re prepared to shell out for the Photography Kit, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra would be out top pick for best camera phone. Or, if you want the best point and shoot photography available, we’d recommend the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL.

So, perhaps it’s not entirely a surprise that OnePlus has decided to move on. The phone brand will instead be focusing on its own camera system. Called OnePlus DetailMax Engine, it’s built from the ground up to deliver higher clarity and detail.

The system, according to the company, is designed based on user feedback and places greater emphasis on computational photography. Lau promises “unrivalled depth and realism” but exactly how the technology stacks up against Hasselblad cameras remains to be seen.

It’s also rumoured that OnePlus will be moving on from its characteristic round camera module on the back.

The OnePlus 15 will be the first flagship with the DetailMax Engine and, according to leaked specs, it will feature an upgraded 85mm telephoto lens.

OnePlus has already published its first batch of samples from the new camera phone (shared by GizmoChina), intended to showcase the phone’s telephoto capability. Perhaps as you’d expect from images posted by the brand itself, there’s impressive detail rendering and vibrant colours. Still, we won’t know until we get our hands on it and we can’t wait to test it out for ourselves.

The OnePlus 15 is expected launch in China by October 2025, followed by India and global markets in early 2026, with a global presentation at CES.
