1. Login to SEMrush account
Log in to your SEMrush account and ensure that you have permission to use the 'Keyword Gap' tool.
2. Enter the keyword difference analysis tool
On the left menu bar of the SEMrush homepage, find and click on the "Keyword Gap" tool.
3. Enter your and your competitor's domain names
Enter your domain name: In the tool interface, first enter your website domain name as the "main website".
Enter competitor domain names: Next, enter the domain names of one or more major competitors. You can enter up to 5 domain names for comparison.
4. Select keyword type
SEMrush provides various types of keyword data:
Organic Keywords: View the differences in keywords between you and your competitors in organic search.
Paid Keywords: View the differences in keywords between you and your competitors in paid ads such as Google Ads.
PLA keywords (Product Listing Ads): If you are an e-commerce website, you can view the product advertising keywords of your competitors.
5. Analysis results
Once you enter the domain name and click "Compare", you will see a detailed keyword comparison result, including the following situations:
Shared Keywords: Keywords that both you and your competitors are using.
Missing Keywords: Keywords that competitors rank high but your website has not yet covered. This is the most valuable part, indicating that you can focus on optimizing the opportunity words.
Weak Keywords: Keywords that rank lower than your competitors' rankings.
Strong Keywords: Keywords that rank high for you and low for your competitors.
Untapped Keywords: Keywords that competitors rank here but you are not involved in.
6. Filter and export keywords
Use filters to filter out the most relevant keywords, such as by search volume, ranking gap, competitiveness, and other criteria.
After filtering, you can click "Export" to export the data to an Excel or CSV file for further analysis.
