Samsung’s latest flagship foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, is now official, having been announced on Wednesday in Brooklyn, New York. Having first launched its Fold series in 2019, the Korean manufacturer has quickly breezed through seven generations of the dynamic form factor, tweaking its style and adapting it to an ever-changing technology landscape.
Samsung notes the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is its thinnest and lightest Fold model to date, weighing in at just 215g, or less than an 8-ounce cup of coffee. The new model is nearly half as thin as the original Galaxy Fold, at 61 grams lighter. Its dimensions are 72.8 x 158.4 x 8.9mm folded and 143.2 x 158.4 x 4.2mm unfolded. Meanwhile, the main display is wider than the previous generation, allowing for easier handling of various applications, for productivity, multitasking, and leisure.
Display, hardware, and design
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features an 8-inch Infinity Flex Display (2184 x 1968) main screen with 368ppi and 2,600 nits peak brightness, and a 6.5-inch FHD+ (2520 x 1080) display cover screen with a 422ppi, 21:9 aspect ratio. Both displays have a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.
Hardware-wise, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, with 12GB and 16GB memory options and 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB internal storage options, in addition to a 4,400mAh dual battery that supports 25-watt wired charging; up to 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes, fast wireless charging 2.0, and Wireless PowerShare.
Design-wise, Samsung has employed a new Armor FlexHinge, which is woven to be thinner and lighter and supports a titanium layer internally. This aids in the device having a IP48 waterproof rating. The cover display of the device is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, while the back is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Samsung said it kept the Ultra-Thin Glass that makes up the foldable main display thick to maintain the integrity of the screen. Otherwise, all of the other components are made of lighter materials. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 frame is made of Advanced Armor Aluminum, which also adds strength to the hinge and the chassis overall.
Camera
Camera-wise, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features an elaborate triple camera system with a 200-megapixel wide-angle lens, bringing the configuration from Samsung’s Ultra models in the S series, a second 12-megapixel Ultra-Wide lens, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens. Additionally, it includes a 10-megapixel main camera and a 10-megapixel Cover camera for selfies.
The device includes several camera editing features, including Audio Eraser, which allows you to make edits to the sound in a video. Photo Assist allows for edits, such as filling backgrounds, Portrait Studio uses Generative Edit for unique edits like adding lenses, and Suggest Erases, which can detect background objects that need deleting. The camera also includes Side-by-Side Editing and Show Original settings that allow you to view your progress with the changes you’ve made to an image or video, similar to a desktop.
Software, security, and AI
The foldable is the first device to ship with Android 16 running out of the box, with Samsung’s One UI 8 running on top. The manufacturer maintains its seven generations of OS updates promise with this device.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 includes several AI highlights, such as Gemini Live with multimodal functions, which allow you to type or speak queries, or use Gemini Live or camera sharing for additional context. Circle to Search allows you to circle items on your screen to activate a search engine session. The device is also optimized for its large display, with the function AI Results View, which will show AI results in a separate split view or floating view window. Drag & Drop allows you to move AI results into different windows. Drawing Assist and Writing Assist are additional tools that you can use for creativity and brainstorming.
Samsung also detailed the security features included on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, within its Knox with Knox Vault systems. The brand detailed an app-specific storage area called KEEP, Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection, that allows individual apps to house protected information in an encrypted environment. Meanwhile, updates to Knox Matrix provide system security, and Secure Wi-Fi is now safer on public networks.
