A stampede occurred at a political rally in India, leaving 38 people dead and more than 50 injured.
A stampede broke out at a rally held by India's renowned actor Vijay (Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar) in Tamil Nadu, southern India, on Saturday (September 27th). After the incident, numerous pairs of shoes and Vijay's support items were scattered at the scene.
A stampede occurred at a political rally in southern India, where Vijay, a politician who started his career as an actor, was present. The tragedy left 38 people dead, including 10 children, and over 50 others injured.
According to a report by The Hindustan Times, the stampede happened at the rally organized by Vijay (Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar) in Tamil Nadu, southern India, on Saturday (September 27th).
Due to a delay in Vijay's arrival, the crowd kept gathering at the venue and eventually reached approximately 27,000 people—far exceeding the expected 10,000.
Citing witness accounts, Agence France-Presse (AFP) stated that the tragedy was caused by several factors: hours of delay, insufficient police presence, and panic triggered when someone fell from a tree branch into the audience.
Local police said the crowd began pouring in at 11 a.m., while Vijay did not arrive until 7:40 p.m. The people, who had been waiting under the scorching sun for a long time, lacked adequate food and drinking water.
After the incident, Vijay posted on social media, "My heart is broken, and I am overwhelmed by unbearable and indescribable pain and sorrow."
He also extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the tragedy as "deeply distressing."
Vijay is one of the most box-office draws in the Tamil film industry over the past 30 years. Since he founded his political party "Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam" last year, his public rallies have often attracted large crowds. He is actively conducting election campaigns in preparation for the state elections scheduled for early next year.
This tragic incident highlights the challenges India faces in crowd management. In recent years, there have been multiple stampedes at political and religious gatherings in the country. As recently as June this year, a severe stampede also occurred during the victory celebration of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Bangalore.
