US President Trump announced that he will allow Nvidia to supply H200 artificial intelligence (AI) chips to approved customers in China and other countries, on the condition that it can ensure the continued strength of US national security.
Reuters reported that Trump said on X platform on Monday (December 8) that the US Department of Commerce is finalizing specific details, and the same plan will also apply to AMD, Intel, and other US companies.
Trump stated that "25% of it will be paid to the United States," and the White House has not yet commented on Trump's statement.
The Nvidia H200 chip released in 2023 has a larger high bandwidth memory compared to its predecessor H100 chip, allowing for faster data processing.
According to a report released by the non partisan think tank Institute for Progress (IFP) on Sunday (7th), the computing power of Nvidia H200 chip is nearly six times stronger than H20 chip. The H20 chip is currently the most advanced AI chip that can be legally exported to China, and the Trump administration briefly banned the export of such products.
The IFP report also points out that obtaining the H200 chip will enable Chinese AI laboratories to manufacture AI supercomputers comparable to top American AI supercomputers, albeit at a higher cost.
Trump previously stated that Nvidia's latest Blackwell chip will not be allowed to be exported to China.
