U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russia, with its vast territory, holds a stronger position in peace negotiations. He also asserted that Ukraine will never be able to join NATO.
Moscow said that the latest remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on Ukraine are consistent with Russia’s position.
In a recent interview with Politico, a news magazine, Trump described European leaders as "weak" and called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to hold elections. These comments have unsettled Kyiv and Europe.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told AFP and other media outlets on Wednesday (December 10): "On a host of issues including NATO membership, territorial matters and Ukraine’s loss of land, his views are highly consistent with our understanding."
Peskov added that Trump’s remarks are "very important".
Trump stated that Russia, boasting a vast territory, has a stronger standing in peace talks. He also affirmed that Ukraine will never gain NATO membership.
Ukraine is under martial law and thus unable to hold elections. Following the release of Trump’s interview, Zelenskyy said he is ready to hold new elections as soon as security is guaranteed.
The Russia-Ukraine peace talks, recently mediated by the United States, have made slow progress. In the interview, Trump said that reaching an agreement is "fraught with difficulties", adding that "one of the reasons is the extremely deep hatred between Putin and Zelenskyy".
