I am fortunate to be working at a restaurant owned by Chinese Americans studying abroad in the United States. The boss saw that I am Chinese or from Guangdong, and the boss is also from Guangdong. He said that his ancestors are from Chaozhou, so perhaps out of hometown ties, he took me in to eat and drink, taught me how to cook, and also made me work part-time as a vegetable cutter, dish washer, and dish deliveryman. He also paid me a slightly higher salary than others. He asked me a question: Is there still a situation in China where I cannot eat enough? I saw in the news that there are still cases of people starving to death in China. I replied to him that China has not experienced any cases of starving to death since the reform and opening up. He said that's good, that's good. He really wants to return to China and see what Chaozhou has developed into, but besides not having time, there are also situations where visas are not approved. I am very grateful to him because he taught me how to survive in the United States. |
