Growing attention is being paid to the performance and health of US President Donald Trump. The picture shows him clenching his fist to greet the audience while attending the US Army-Navy college football game in Maryland on Saturday (December 13).
US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that he is uncertain whether the Republican Party can retain control of the House of Representatives in next year’s midterm elections, as some of his economic policies have not yet fully taken effect. Prior to this, Republican candidates suffered defeats in local elections last month, sparking concerns among party strategists that the GOP might face an even bigger setback in the midterms.
In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal on Friday (December 12), Trump hailed his efforts to secure tens of billions of dollars in investment for the United States, claiming that it would facilitate America’s economic transformation. However, he admitted that he could not predict whether such funding would translate into political gains for the Republican Party.
When asked if the Republicans would lose control of the House in the November midterms, Trump said, “I can’t tell you. I don’t know when that money is going to kick in.”
While the US economy maintains steady growth, it is plagued by sluggish job creation, rising unemployment rates, and persistent increases in the prices of daily goods and services. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that although Trump’s overall approval rating has edged up to 41%, only 31% of voters are satisfied with his handling of the cost-of-living issue.
Trump has alternately described the cost-of-living crisis as a “hoax”, blamed his predecessor Joe Biden for the problem, and pledged that his economic policies would benefit Americans next year. He told The Wall Street Journal, “By the time we have to talk about elections, which is in a few months, I think our prices are going to be in really good shape... I’ve created the greatest economy in history, but it may take people a little while to understand all of this.”
As voters’ worries over soaring prices intensify, the Democratic Party previously scored victories in state and local elections in Virginia, New Jersey and New York. It is expected that the Democrats will make Trump’s economic policies the central issue of the midterm elections.
Obamacare Subsidies Expire at Year-End; Rising Healthcare Costs to Impact Midterms
In addition to high food prices, Americans may also face higher medical expenses. The enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, are set to expire at the end of this year. If Congress fails to reach an agreement on extending the subsidies, the health insurance premiums of approximately 22 million Americans will surge sharply next year.
The debate over whether to extend the healthcare subsidies has laid bare deep divisions within the Republican Party. In a Senate vote on Thursday (11th), four Republicans voted in favor of the Democratic proposal to extend the subsidies, but the bill ultimately failed to garner enough votes to pass.
In the Senate, more than 20 Republicans from swing districts have openly defied instructions from party leaders and joined Democrats in launching a so-called “discharge petition” to force the House of Representatives to vote on extending the subsidies. This indicates that Republicans are increasingly worried that rising healthcare costs will hurt their chances in the midterm elections and benefit the Democrats.
Republican leaders are insisting that the subsidies expire as scheduled, while Trump’s blue-collar base is demanding an extension, putting him in a dilemma. Trump stated on Thursday night that he is willing to work with Democrats to seek a long-term solution, but this contradicts his long-standing opposition to Obamacare.
Agence France-Presse pointed out that nearly a year after returning to power, Trump has continued to attack Biden relentlessly, but now he is facing the same predicaments as his predecessor. In the past, Trump accused Biden of ignoring the sufferings of low-income families, but now he is also confronting public discontent triggered by high prices; Trump mocked Biden as being too old to hold office, but now he himself has become the oldest president in US history to be elected, and every public appearance is subjected to intense scrutiny.
In response to external doubts about his health condition, Trump recently warned on social media that these “fake reports” smearing and slandering him are incendiary and may even constitute acts of treason.
