On Monday, December 29, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand was hard-won and must not stall, be abandoned halfway, or allow hostilities to reignite. He urged both countries to rebuild mutual trust, maintain communication and consultation on implementing the ceasefire arrangements, and gradually advance the restoration of bilateral relations.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi: Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire Must Not Be Abandoned or Allow Fighting to Resume

On Sunday, December 28, Wang held separate meetings in Yuxi, Yunnan Province, with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa. The three foreign ministers then convened a trilateral China-Cambodia-Thailand meeting on Monday, attended by military officials from all three countries.

Wang noted that since the outbreak of border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, Beijing has actively mediated and facilitated dialogue. Chinese leaders have maintained communication with their Cambodian and Thai counterparts, and the foreign ministers have held multiple phone calls. A Chinese special envoy has also made four shuttle visits, primarily to listen to both sides, address their legitimate concerns, and help identify pathways for resolving differences through dialogue and negotiation. Thanks to these collective efforts, the militaries of Cambodia and Thailand recently reached a ceasefire agreement—a development China welcomes.

Wang pointed out that multiple bilateral talks have been held among the three parties in Yunnan, particularly face-to-face, in-depth exchanges between Cambodian and Thai diplomatic and military officials on the ground. All sides demonstrated a positive and open attitude, committed to de-escalation and willing to improve bilateral relations based on the ceasefire.

He emphasized that the trilateral discussions were beneficial and constructive, yielding important consensus on three points:

First, all parties must look forward and move ahead together. The ceasefire agreement is hard-earned; it must not stall, be abandoned midway, or allow fighting to resume—outcomes neither desired by the people nor hoped for by China.

Second, progress must be steady and continuous. Wang stressed that implementation of the ceasefire requires ongoing communication and consultation, and the restoration of bilateral relations must proceed step by step. But as long as both sides maintain confidence and engage in equal dialogue, they will surely achieve their goals.

Third, rebuilding mutual trust is paramount. Wang noted that conflict has eroded trust, yet Cambodia and Thailand are eternal neighbors with a long history of friendly exchanges. Gathering at Fuxian Lake—a scenic site in Yuxi and Yunnan’s third-largest lake—he expressed hope that this meeting would help heal the wounds of conflict, dispel mutual misunderstandings, and truly restore amicable ties, which aligns with the interests of both peoples and the shared expectations of all parties.

Wang affirmed that China will always act as a promoter of Cambodia-Thailand relations and stands ready to provide all necessary assistance and support—including ceasefire monitoring, humanitarian aid, and demining cooperation—so that bilateral ties can return to the right track as soon as possible.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the foreign ministers of Cambodia and Thailand expressed gratitude to China for hosting the dialogue platform and highly commended Beijing’s constructive role in defusing tensions, easing the situation, and promoting dialogue. Both sides underscored the precious value of peace and reaffirmed their commitment to actively implement the ceasefire agreement, make full use of dialogue mechanisms at all levels, jointly manage and resolve disputes, and safeguard peace along their shared border.

Following the trilateral meeting, the three parties issued a joint communiqué outlining five areas of cooperation through which Cambodia and Thailand will enhance communication, deepen mutual understanding, and progressively consolidate the ceasefire, restore interactions, rebuild political trust, normalize relations, and uphold regional peace.
