Tech giant Apple has released its thinnest new phone to date, the iPhone Air, and for the first time eliminated physical card slots, adopting a design that only supports eSIM. At present, China Unicom is the only operator in Chinese Mainland that supports iPhone eSIM.

Apple held its autumn product launch event in the early hours of Wednesday (September 10th) Singapore time, launching the iPhone Air with a thickness of only 5.6 millimeters, becoming the thinnest iPhone to date with a starting price of $999.

The biggest change to the iPhone Air is the elimination of physical card slots, with a globally unified design that only supports eSIM and supports dual eSIM. Two cards can be activated simultaneously, but it is necessary to confirm whether the carrier supports the relevant services before use.

Apple's official website in China shows that China Unicom is the only supported iPhone eSIM operator in Chinese Mainland. Users can go to China Unicom's offline business hall to verify their identity documents and activate them.

However, China Unicom customer service revealed that no relevant notice has been issued regarding the support of eSIM services for mobile phones, only eSIM services for watches. Customer service suggests that users consult with Apple for the specific start time of the cooperation.

A staff member from China Unicom's business hall said that they are currently unable to handle eSIM services for iPhones and have not received specific training notifications. They advise users to be patient and wait for further updates.

Unlike traditional SIM cards that require plugging and unplugging, eSIM is directly embedded in the terminal and can be downloaded and updated remotely. It not only saves device space, but also has higher security and convenience.

Apple stated at the press conference that eSIM has become the industry standard and is also great for travel.
