OpenAI is bringing an interesting ChatGPT memory feature to its free tier users after introducing it to Plus and Pro users in February. The feature allows users to reference previous chat conversations to create a more personalized experience. The brand indicated that users can benefit from utilizing this feature by tailoring their ChatGPT account to their preferences and interests, which can make their responses stronger and more impactful.

A demo on X showed how a user can input a prompt asking ChatGPT to recall what they discussed over the weekend, and the chatbot gave a rundown about cat behavior, and a specific type of outfit idea.

While this memory feature is now available to free users, OpenAI noted that it is a light-weight version that won’t record as much data as the Plus and Pro versions of ChatGPT. To get a more robust experience, you will have to pay. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month and ChatGPT Pro costs $200. However, most free users should be satisfied with the free tier experience.

The Saved Memories can be found in the Personalization section of Settings. For the free tier, OpenAI regulates the amount of memories that can be stored at any given time. Once the Manage memories inbox is full you must delete some memories in order to continue storing more. OpenAI said it may only store a record of deleted Saved Memories for approximately 30 days for safety and debugging purposes.

You can access the Manage memories inbox in the Reference chat history option. Notable for me, memories that were already available included my gender and birth date with birth time included. I thought this was an interesting tidbit because I occasionally use ChatGPT to indulge my astrology special interest.

In the Personalization section, you can toggle of Reference saved memories and Reference chat history options if you don’t want to use the memory feature.

OpenAI has also reminded that its Temporary Chat option is also available for when you want to use the chatbot and not save your data at all.
