Qualcomm's AI-enabled Snapdragon Ride Pilot Automated Driving System will debut in BMW's upcoming iX3 electric SUV.
A major collaboration has been announced between semiconductor and tech development company Qualcomm and motor vehicle company BMW. Qualcomm has created its own version of AI-powered autonomous driving technology called the Snapdragon Ride Pilot Automated Driving System, and it is expected to officially launch in BMW’s upcoming iX3 electric SUV before the end of 2025.
Qualcomm announced its collaboration with BMW in a press release on the Qualcomm website. According to the announcement, the Snapdragon Ride Pilot Automated Driving System comes on Qualcomm’s new automotive Snapdragon Ride system-on-chips and has been “validated in 60 countries worldwide and is targeted to be available in more than 100 countries by 2026.” With its debut in the BMW iX3, Qualcomm will also license the Snapdragon Ride Pilot to global automakers.
Qualcomm is optimistic about the adoption of its new automated driving tech once it debuts in the BMW iX3, as shared by Qualcomm Group General Manager Nakul Duggal:
We're excited to see this system come to life in the BMW iX3, supporting BMW's vision for intelligent and safe driving, and we anticipate its widespread adoption will drive a new era of innovation and excellence in mobility solutions.
By all accounts and features, Qualcomm’s system looks set to compete directly with Telsa’s own Self-Driving Technology, which the company and CEO Elon Musk have relentlessly pushed for widespread adoption in the United States through ventures like the Cybercab.
With its automated driving system debuting in BMW’s vehicles, it will be interesting to see if Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride system does indeed catch. Stay tuned to the Qualcomm topic for more updates and news as it drops.
