Trump ordered the deployment of troops to Portland and authorized "the use of full force if necessary".
In recent days, U.S. President Trump has made multiple tough remarks on the situation in Portland, Oregon. He told the media that there were "crazy people" attempting to set fire to buildings locally, claiming "they are professional agitators and anarchists," but provided no corresponding evidence.
U.S. President Trump ordered troops to be stationed in Portland, Oregon, to crack down on "domestic terrorists" who oppose his immigration policies, and authorized the military to "use full force if necessary."
In a post on Saturday (September 27th), Trump stated that he had instructed Defense Secretary Esper to "provide all necessary troops to protect war-torn Portland, as well as any U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities under siege by (far-left radical group) 'Antifa' and other domestic terrorists."
In recent days, Trump has repeatedly made hardline comments on the situation in Portland. He told the media that "crazy people" were trying to burn down buildings there, describing "them as professional provocateurs and anarchists," yet failed to provide any supporting evidence.
If this deployment proceeds, Portland will become the fourth city to see such an operation during Trump's tenure. Previously, the National Guard had been dispatched to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Memphis successively to assist in immigration law enforcement, clear the streets, and support public security work.
However, Oregon Governor Kotek said at a press conference, "There is no insurrection, and there is no threat to national security. Our major cities do not need troops." She also stated that she had held talks with Trump and the Secretary of Homeland Security on this matter, and would continue to make her stance clear to Trump, urging him to reconsider the deployment decision.
Portland Mayor Wheeler said, "In Portland, and in every other American city for that matter, the number of troops needed is zero. The President will not see lawlessness or violence here unless he intends to create it."
