Legendary Langham Skeldon 1978
The world's most expensive drink grade rum, Luca's ex girlfriend's birthday rum. For detailed stories, please refer to my article from Whiskylive last year
I took advantage of Whiskylive's recent bottle opening yesterday to give this legendary product a try ??
This is an extremely deep red rum, perhaps one of the most intense colors I have ever seen.
The aroma is rich in layers, interwoven with caramel, ignited gunpowder, saltpeter, and smoke, accompanied by deep woody notes and a faint red fruit aroma. After standing still for a period of time, the smoky and woody texture gradually dissipated, replaced by the sweet aroma of red fruits, mixed with a hint of soy sauce and ink, as well as a slightly astringent woody texture.
When entering, the rich caramel flavor and the sweet aroma of red fruits and loquat paste, as well as the fire like smell, burst open in the mouth. As the taste spreads, the presence of tannins is just right, supporting the overall flavor structure. Subsequently, there is a deep woody aroma mixed with a dry gunpowder smell, and the overall flavor is more like the scent of damp wood after being exposed to sunlight, rather than the taste of fresh damp wood. The ending has a distinct oak bitterness and dark chocolate aftertaste, but at the same time, there is a hint of loquat paste like sweetness that leaves a lingering aftertaste. The aftertaste has a decent duration. After standing for a period of time, the sulfur smell of the gunpowder gradually fades away, and the woody tone becomes more prominent, which is speculated to be related to the material of the distiller.
