The Beijing court in China has announced in the first instance of the compensation case for the families of eight missing passengers on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, with a compensation of 2.9 million yuan (531800 Singapore dollars) per case.

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and China News Service, on December 5th, the Chaoyang Court in Beijing ordered Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia International Airlines Limited to compensate passengers' families with death compensation, funeral expenses, mental distress compensation, and other losses and related expenses totaling more than 2.9 million yuan in each case, in accordance with the Montreal Convention and relevant Chinese laws and regulations.

Since 2016, 75 families of missing passengers have filed lawsuits, demanding compensation for losses and the establishment of search and rescue funds from Malaysia Airlines, Malaysia Airlines International, and others, resulting in a total of 78 cases.

The court found that the MH370 aircraft went missing during its flight on March 8, 2014. On January 19, 2015, the Malaysian government officially announced the crash of MH370 flight and presumed that all 239 passengers and crew members on board had died.

During the trial process, after multiple rounds of mediation presided over by the court, the families of passengers in 47 cases reached a settlement with the defendant through consultation and withdrew the lawsuit. The total number of cases sentenced this time is eight, involving eight passengers, all of whom have been declared dead according to legal procedures.

The remaining 23 cases are still under trial as the family members of the passengers have not yet applied for a declaration of death or completed the declaration process.

Last week, the Malaysian government announced the resumption of the search for MH370 on the 30th of this month.
