Despite the dissolution of the lower house of parliament and the upcoming general election by Thai Prime Minister Anuntin, which is seen as an attempt to boost his own and his party's election prospects through nationalist sentiment, the latest poll results in Thailand show that Anuntin's approval rating has declined instead of rising.
According to a poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Management in Thailand from December 4th to 12th, only 12.32% of respondents supported Anutin, which is about 8 percentage points lower than the 20.44% in the September poll.
The Thai Pride Party led by Anutin is not as popular as the People's Party, and even lags behind the Democratic Party and the Thai Rakyat Party, ranking fourth with only 9.92% support.
However, the support rate of the leader of the People's Party, Natapong, who ranks first among the candidates for Prime Minister, has also declined, from 22.8% in September to 17.2% currently.
As many as 40.6% of respondents believe that there is no suitable candidate to become prime minister, significantly higher than the previous poll's 27.28%.
According to the Bangkok Post, the Phet Thai Party will announce the list of prime minister candidates on Tuesday (December 16), and it is expected that someone from the family of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will become a candidate.
Yodchanan Wongsawat, 46, is the eldest son of former Prime Minister Somchai and Thaksin's sister Yowapa, and also the nephew of Thaksin. He is currently the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Mahidol University. He ran for the third constituency of Chiang Mai Province in the 2014 general election and won in informal statistics, but due to political turmoil and subsequent coups, the election process was not completed.
In addition, the leader of the Thai Party, Chulaban, and the election director Suriya Jungrunggungkit will also be listed as candidates.
