Iran announced it has successfully thwarted a large-scale cyberattack targeting its communications infrastructure. On December 31 local time, Iran's Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Hashemi, stated that the country faced a massive cyberattack on December 28 directed at its communications infrastructure. The attack originated from more than 120,000 distinct sources worldwide and specifically targeted an Iranian telecommunications service provider. Thanks to measures taken by relevant authorities, the attack was successfully repelled. Hashemi described the scale and intensity of the cyberattack as among the most severe in recent times. He noted that the incident could have posed a serious challenge to Iran, but through the round-the-clock efforts of intelligence, resources, and communications experts, the attack was brought under control without causing a crisis. Hashemi emphasized that implementing major infrastructure projects to enhance the quality of communications services remains the top priority at this stage.
